Blonde is Back with a Bang!

March 08, 2023

Dan Spiller spills his insider knowledge on all things Blonde…

Blonde is back with a bang in 2023, and in more ways than one! I have a real passion for all things blonde, so to say I am delighted to see the trend reinvent itself with a modern-day twist is an understatement. It’s time to get clients ready for summer, lighten up those locks and create bespoke, blonde shades that are on the must-have list.”

Barbie Blonde

It has been predicted that ‘Barbie Blonde’ will be the shade of the year, and within our salons we are already seeing clients opt for this brighter, more platinum look. Depending on the client’s complexion and skin tone, I would make the decision to add a blend of warmer shades throughout, or opt for a much cooler shade; it is all dependant on the individual.

Lunar Blonde

This is a brand-new trend which has emerged and that I am excited to see come to life throughout spring and summer. Resembling moonlight, this shade is similar to the platinum blonde that we all know and love – however, the addition of gorgeous golden tones throughout makes it extra special. With the contrast of the two shades adding a juxtaposing effect, the look is definitely set to wow hair lovers this year.

Uptown Blonde

High maintenance? Then this is the perfect blonde for those clients who love the wow factor when it comes to their hair. Bringing two older trends together – bleached blonde and beachy balayage – we create this creamy ‘uptown’ blonde. It’s a tribute to the blondes of the sixties! However, it is important to remember that this blonde is extremely high maintenance and requires regular care.

My top tips for maintaining the perfect blonde shade:

  1. As we know, blondes require continuous care and maintenance to ensure they look their best at all times and to prevent the colour from fading. As an expert in your field, you need to share your knowledge and provide your client with your homecare recommendations. Recommending a specific shampoo, such as the JOICO Blonde Life Brightening Shampoo, will benefit the client and result in a long-lasting colour, as well as healthy hair. Let them know you have their hair in your best interests and explain why professional products are a must have.
  2. A toner – something so simple but can really give the blonde hair longevity. This can remove any brassy tones and keep the blonde shade fresh and full of life. Having a toner applied between appointments can really keep the colour alive.
  3. My last tip is to educate your clients on heat and how this can affect the hair very quickly. Although we all love using heat defence, we also love the use of electrical tools; I always pre-warn my clients about how this can result in colour fade and damage the hair when used continuously. Showcase styles that are long-lasting and don’t require the constant use of heat – variation is key!
