5 tips for getting the most out of education by Sheree Thompson of Siren Bridal Hair Art

January 13, 2021

No matter how difficult 2020 has been for us within the hairdressing industry, one thing that has come to light is the amount of education being offered by so many individuals and brands, it truly is so inspirational to see and of course to be a part of.

Of course the current pandemic has prevented us from holding live demonstrations in the salons or at beautiful venues, however what it has done is shown us how creative we can be by using different platforms such as Skype, Zoom, Teams, Instagram, Facebook and YouTube … and of course a little bit of TikTok (which we are all guilty of doing!)

I’m often asked how you can get the most out of education whilst at home and also when running an extremely busy column/salon. Here, I’ve put together my five top tips for getting as much out of your education as possible.

Tip 1

Be focused

It may be a simple thing, but giving your education session your full attention is key to getting as much out of it as you can.

If you are not in ‘the zone’ you will not absorb everything needed and this would waste your time and you may miss out on vital information. It’s better to try again once you are focused and feeling ready!

Tip 2

Take your time

We are very fortunate that during lockdown, many educational workshops have been available after they have gone live, allowing stylists and colourists to revisit the session and learn at their own pace which is absolutely fantastic.

This has worked in our favour because it allows us to practice and practice again. Being in lockdown many of us are working from home, have kids at home and are keeping up with general life therefore re-watching and being able to go back over different parts is fantastic.

If you’d like to really focus on something again, you can now do it!

Tip 3

Ask questions

Always, always, always ask questions – this is the best way to progress and you can find out as much as you can about a certain topic or part of the session.

As an educator, I love nothing more than answering questions from my students as I know then that they feel comfortable enough to ask me ‘why’ or ‘how’ and it’s great to be able to really expand on what I am delivering within the course.

Tip 4

Network on the workshop

Always remember that when you are on a course or a seminar, it’s important to network with those who are joining you as this will allow you to build up an extensive network of peers and may evolve into friendships.

However the main point of networking is being able to share your knowledge and receive knowledge from those around you.

You may be looking to get some advice on how to do something specific so this is your opportunity to get to know people and unite!

Tip 5

Enjoy !

The simplest way to get as much out of an educational session is to simply enjoy it – if you are not excited about what you are embarking on the chances are this is not the one for you.

Excitement to learn and to progress your career will tie in all the tips above and allow to you take as much away from the course as possible.

Have fun, as educators we love nothing more than you smiling and enjoying our sessions.
