On the 18th birthday of SESH Hairdressing, salon owner Simon Hill is well-acquainted with the highs and lows of the industry.
From building a strong, loyal team to navigating through many different climates, we caught up with Simon to learn the ultimate tips and tricks for any salon owner beginning their journey…
BUILD A STRONG TEAM
- ‘The very first team member I had still works with me now as a Creative Director in the salon. Having great people around you will help you achieve your goals and ultimately enable you to build a great clientele and healthy business. This has helped tremendously at SESH Hairdressing, not only does each team member work brilliantly with me but also with each other.’
SEEK SUPPORT OR ADVICE IN AREAS WHERE YOU MAY NOT BE AS KNOWLEDGABLE OR SKILLED
- ‘For example, I work closely with a business partner as my strengths lie more within the creative aspect of running the salon. To run a successful business, you need to understand your finances and be able to forecast, plan and prepare as best you can. This is invaluable, if it doesn’t come naturally to you then don’t be afraid to seek support from someone who you can learn from.’
WHEN IT COMES TO SALON DESIGN, OPT FOR SOMETHING TIMELESS
- ‘If you are led by trends, you may feel your salon décor and interior becomes dated quickly. This could lead to you spending more money to update your salon and creating something that your clients can’t easily identify as your brand. Stick to timeless styling that you can update with small touches to suit your salon brand and message at that time.’
LOCAL COMMUNITY IS VERY IMPORTANT
- ‘We have worked hard to immerse ourselves into this and it has paid off. I would definitely encourage other salon owners to do the same. Build relationships with local businesses, work with them to introduce your services to their clients, get involved with local events, make sure the people in your area know about your business and are always hearing about what you do.’
REMEMBER TO BE YOURSELF
- ‘This is my number one top tip. Building a successful business will come from following your authentic self and ensuring you follow your own path.’
