Talking Heads | Fine Hair

February 12, 2026

Join our conversations throughout 2026, as we ask experts up and down the country their thoughts on specific hair types, textures and treatments. Kicking things off this month, we have everything you need to know about fine hair…

Hadley Yates | Curated Hair Co-founder

“When I’m working with clients who have finer or naturally thinning hair, I always recommend looking at solutions that add density without overwhelming the hair. One of the most effective tools I use in the salon is one of our super lightweight Clip-In Hair Fillers from my brand, CURATED. It allows you to build fullness exactly where it’s needed – especially around the front and crown – without committing to permanent extensions. They sit gently on the hair, they’re low-maintenance and they give instant volume in a way that still looks completely natural.”

Tracey Ann Smith | Mood Creative Director

“Ensuring you use products that are specifically tailored to providing volume is key for those clients with thinner, finer hair types. MOOD has just launched a brand-new line – The Body Builder Thickening System – which I find is perfect for giving the hair a thicker and fuller appearance.

In terms of styling, I find a heated iron or curling tong is best for adding more body, bounce and movement to the hair. I also like to pair these styles with a deep side-parting to achieve instant volume at the roots.”

Stacy Odwell | Natural Extensions Co-founder

“From my experience with finer hair clients, less is more when it comes to extensions. Using fewer, carefully placed attachments is key; it enhances the hair without overfilling it, ensuring the finished look remains soft, natural and healthy.

Many of my clients come to me after experiencing hormone-related hair changes, especially during perimenopause and menopause. These natural transitions can cause thinning, reduced density and texture changes. My goal is to restore their confidence by enhancing what’s already there – creating fuller, softer and more youthful-looking hair that feels just like their own.”

Bruno Marc Giamattei | Joico Emea Senior Creative Director

“When it comes to fine hair, there are certain things to keep in mind to ensure that the hair doesn’t fall flat. I’d recommend using a lightweight shampoo and conditioner specifically designed for fine hair – such as JOICO’s JoiFull Volumizing Range. When it comes to shampooing, focus mostly on the roots, and when conditioning, focus mostly on the ends.

Blow-drying the hair from the root will also give you a more voluminous finish, along with incorporating products like a volumising mousse or root-lift spray.”

Justin Mackland | Alfa Italia Styling Ambassador

“When working with fine hair, it’s all about creating volume and movement without compromising the integrity of the hair. I always start with the Alfa Italia Luna Hybrid Pro Smart Dryer – it’s lightweight and powerful, which helps me build body at the root, while still keeping the hair smooth and healthy.’

Andy Heasman | RUSH International Creative Director

“I’ll say it once (and I’ll probably keep saying it for the rest of my life!), clients need to LISTEN to us stylists when we tell them to get a trim – especially if they have fine hair. Finer hair naturally falls flat, making split ends and breakage far more visible. I’d recommend that clients with this hair type get a trim every 6-8 weeks. Something as small as cutting an inch off can completely transform the hair’s appearance, leaving the client with thicker-looking, more voluminous hair!

Another tip is to ensure clients are choosing haircuts that complement their hair type. The combination of long locks and fine hair can look flat and lifeless, whilst opting for a bob can completely revitalise a look and give the illusion of thicker hair.”

Brandon Messinger | Denman Creative

“When cutting fine hair, you have to be really careful with the perimeter – if you remove too much weight, you will make the ends appear finer and wispier. Avoid square layers, as they can concentrate the bulk on the top interior of the cut and exaggerate the fineness, but instead work with triangular layering techniques to preserve the perimeter and avoid wispiness.”

Carol Ritchie | Carol Ritchie Bespoke Hair

“With fine hair, I like to keep everything light, precise and scalp friendly. I create the volume in the blow-dry by over-directing the roots, playing with the parting and cooling it to lock it in. I still love a multi-brush/round-brush blow-dry with my ERGO brushes. (It’s how I trained at college!)

When cutting, use a blunt outline for instant density, with tiny micro-layers only where you want lift – usually just on the crown and face-frames. Short to mid-lengths naturally feel fuller, but if your clients are insistent on length, keep layers minimal and the ends compact.”

Jim Shaw | Toni&Guy Billericay Director

“When dealing with thinning hair, many male clients try to hide it with longer styles, heavy products or complicated grooming routines. However, the simplest solution can also be the most effective: The Buzz Cut.

This has become one of the most reliable choices for those with fine or thin hair – not only does it embrace your natural hair pattern, but it also reframes thinning as a bold statement, rather than something to cover up. With the hair trimmed very short, sparse areas blend seamlessly with fuller ones. Instead of drawing attention to thinning areas, the buzz cut creates a uniform look that instantly makes the hair seem more even and consistent.”

Dean Lawton Taylor | Trinder Hair Studios

“In terms of styling fine hair, I recommend my clients avoid oils and thick styling products as these can weigh the hair down too much. Instead, try lighter products like texture sprays, mousses or anything that adds texture and grit to the hair for more volume.”

Tracy Roche | Kingsgrove Hair & Beauty Director

“My first piece of advice to anyone working with fine hair is always this: Remember that any mistakes in your colour services will be particularly visible on finer hair.”

Poppy Saunders | Remi Cachet Super Stylist

“Many clients with fine hair will look to extensions to create volume. Whilst these can deliver an amazing result, you HAVE to remember that less is more! My approach is to add as few extensions as possible to create the desired look – you can always add more if needed, but overloading fine hair is so much harder to fix.

In terms of styling, ‘ghost waves’ are a great solution! These undone, unstructured and barely-there waves help to create the illusion of thicker hair effortlessly.”
