December 01, 2022

Christmas party season is here, triggering salons and barbershops to become busier than ever with appointments for the festivities ahead. Jim Shaw, multi-award-winning men’s hairdresser and owner of Toni&Guy Billericay, breaks down the Dos and Don’ts of Men’s party hairstyling.

‘For men, there will be three highly requested looks this year: The voluminous quiff, enhanced bouncy curls and the faux hawk. I will outline how I would achieve these looks in the salon, and my key products for finishing with maximum hold and shine – essential for the party season.’

Voluminous Quiff:

‘The quiff is a classic look that never goes out of style. The Christmas season especially is a great time for clients to really experiment with their quiffs, allowing men’s hairdressers/ barbers to create something cool and creative through adding more shape and extreme volume to the style.’

‘For me, it’s so important to use a hairdryer and large paddle brush when creating this look. In this way you can direct the damp hair more precisely, while also creating volume and movement. Once you’ve done this, using a product like American Crew Fiber is a must. This will increase fullness and add texture, whilst also giving the hair plenty of hold to keep the style in place all night long. It’s also got a low shine which I love for this style, creating a finished look that is truly effortless, super cool and very sexy.’

Enhanced Bouncy Curls:

Curls have been a key trend over recent years for men and for the party season. Over the Christmas period, many men visit the salon expecting to have their curls looking more ‘groomed’ – enhanced, bouncy, full of shine and with little-to-no flyaways.  When creating this look in the salon, I always like to use a hairdryer with a diffuser, working through the curls to give them definition, volume and shine – with no frizz. I would then use a product like Label.m Curl Define Souffle to gently break up the curls. As a result, the curls are not only enhanced with a glossy finish, but they also have the added moisture that is needed throughout the winter months.’

‘This party season, we may also see the return of the perm! As usual during the winter months, we see many men looking to completely change up their style for the New Year ahead. A more modern take on the male perm will be wearing this with longer lengths on top and the hair super short at the side – so that all eyes are on those gorgeous curls.’

 The Faux Hawk:

‘Taking inspiration from the Mohawk, men will look to incorporate a faux style into their party looks this season. This is a great style for men who want something quick and messy, whilst also looking styled to perfection.’

‘The key to creating the faux hawk is ensuring the top of the hair is uniform in length, but also that there are layers throughout the top section to give the hair shape before fading the sides – this creates the perfect contrast. You can then use a product like Label.m Matte Paste to give more definition throughout the hawk, separating the layers to allow them to really stand out. Finish with hairspray to ensure hold all day and night.’
