Re-Connect and do something new with Hooker & Young

April 17, 2020

Award-winning salon owners Gary Hooker & Michael Young share their ideas for re-connecting and doing something new during lock down.

Re-connect with your friends and family, you have the time talk.

How many of us substitute a call for a text? I’m definitely guilty of that 80% of the time. Now more than ever we need human contact even if it is just a voice (hugs can wait). So much emotion and personality gets lost in a text. You can choose to read a text however you want, how many of us have read a text the WRONG way and taken offence to something. It’s crazy really, let’s hope that one of the good things to come out of this is that it gets people talking again.

Find a new interest – you will surprise yourself at how creative you can be in other areas.

Us hairdressers are creative darlings who I believe can turn our hands to most things. Creativity often spills out into many areas, like flower arrangements, colour schemes and interior design. We’re pretty fabulous really aren’t we? Just look at the way we dress, enough said… now go and get creative.

Teach yourself to cook.  It’s more important than ever to eat healthily and cooking can be so much fun!

The creative stuff also includes food (well that’s my excuse anyway!)  I think you’ll agree that all the top chefs in the world are ‘creative’ right? Hairdressers are not the best at eating at the right times or eating healthily for that matter.

Use this time to explore the world of cooking – I personally love it and find it incredibly relaxing and therapeutic.  It’s good for the soul and a great way to switch off. But well-being aside you can create some pretty awesome dishes that taste even better knowing you’ve cooked them yourself. I’ve just mastered the perfect chocolate brownie, not gonna lie it took about 100 attempts to get it right!

The summer is around the corner, stay active, get outdoors as much as you can.

All dog owners should take full advantage of lots of lovely long dog walks.

It’s super important to keep active, so once a day get yourself out on a nice walk (it’s officially summertime) and for those of you have a dog then it’s perfect!  Happy days for you and your furry friend! We have 13 dogs… yes you heard right – 13, so you can imagine how busy that keeps us, it’s a full time job!

Stay connected with your clients.

Don’t forget about those who are on their own, sometimes a friendly voice on the end of the phone can change somebody’s day.

We’re all trying to stay connected to our clients during lockdown. For most, social media updates and posts through your website will be enough, but spare a thought for those clients who have no-one. These are the people who love their salon visits more than anyone, not only do they love their hair, but they love all of you too. They will miss you more than you think. Pick up the phone and ask how they’re doing, it’s the kindest thing you can do through these times.

Acts of kindness

When you venture out to get essentials give a thought to those clients who aren’t able to get out. Maybe they’re elderly, or at high risk and can’t leave their homes. You can leave a small bag at somebody’s door without having any contact. It is acts of kindness like this that make us human.
