Everything You Need to Know About Summer Blondes

May 24, 2024

In the next installment of her exclusive new column, Suzie McGill, Artistic Director at Rainbow Room International and current British Colour Technician of the Year, discusses everything you need to know about summer blondes…

The sun is (almost!) shining and summer is nearly here, which can only mean one thing… blondes! Although blonde hair practically trends all year round, there’s definitely a boom in the summer months when are clients looking to lighten and brighten their hair for the new season.

Everything You Need to Know About: Summer Blondes 1

Blonde trends vary each year – last year it was all about ‘Barbie Blonde’ and this year we will see the return of the ‘Lived-in Blonde’. With clients looking to pair their blonde hues with grungy darker roots, we will begin to see more low-maintenance fawn and bronde-like shades, alongside golden syrup inspired-hues too. However, for those who are still looking for a brighter blonde, ‘Old Money Honey’ shades look beautiful when paired with a softer root and some lighter tones around the face for gentle, soft face-framing.

When it comes to achieving the perfect blonde, I always use Schwarzkopf Professional BLONDME, which can be used to lighten, tone, lift and blend. Being specifically created for blonde hair, I’m never disappointed with the colour results. I also know that the hair is being looked after through the colour process because of the integrated Dual Bond Technology.

Adding classic highlights to create a ‘Weaved-in Blonde’ with BLONDME Lifting and Developers is great for clients who already have a blonde base but want to lift and brighten the hair whilst keeping a natural and soft finish. Whereas for those with a darker base, the BLONDME Premium Lightener 9+ is a must to lift the hair with minimal breakage, before going in with your toner. This is ideal for those grungier looks where you can paint on a darker root for a super cool and chic finish.

When it comes to blonde hair aftercare, I always ensure I have my clients booked in for their next appointment to ensure their colour is kept maintained and looking its best. I also always recommend professional at-home hair maintenance products. The Schwarzkopf Professional Bonacure Color Freeze Silver Shampoo, for example, is great to get rid of any unwanted yellow or brassy tones, as well as for preventing any colour fading. Blonde hair is also more prone to damage being put through the lightening process, therefore I always recommend our incredible Rainbow Room International Repair Hair Mask to keep hair nourished and to help with damage.

These are just some general haircare tips, however, if your client has made the decision to go blonde or add blonde into their hair just for the summer, you should also discuss with them the damaging affects the sun can have on their hair. It’s crucial to make clients aware of the importance of  UV protection in the summer months, encouraging them to pop into the salon for regular treatments to keep their blonde looking beautiful, healthy and shiny.
