“We want to support and encourage the ‘uncut’ diamonds of the industry,” says NHF president Agnes Leonard. “Step Up & SHINE is a fantastic opportunity for one passionate and talented hairstylist to literally step up and shine, making a real difference to their career and future prospects.”
Passionate stylist
Step Up & SHINE was launched in honour of industry legend Christofer Mann. Each year a passionate stylist who may not have access to quality training is selected to benefit from an exciting year-long bespoke educational programme.
This prestigious and hotly contested annual competition is jointly run by the NHF and the Fellowship for British Hairdressing. The prize, worth £2,500 to cover training and travel expenses, is open to hairdressers of any age and level of experience.
‘Like no other prize’
2018’s Step Up & SHINE winner was Nicola Hamm from Escape Hair Lounge in Portsmouth. She began her journey with mentor Debbie G, and was also trained by Ruffians Barbers, TONI&GUY and Not Another Academy.
“Winning the Step Up & SHINE Scholarship has changed the outlook I have on my career,” says Nicola. “It has given me immense confidence and challenged and motivated me. The fact that you can choose which courses you want to attend is like no other prize in our industry.”

Entrants will need to complete a short application form and record a 60-second video clip explaining their hairdressing background and ambitions for the future.
