Brightening up the January Blues with Cos Sakkas

January 17, 2023

There’s no better time than the start of the year for your clients to plan a loving regime for their hair. As the professional, it is your job to guide them and ensure they get the best from their tresses all year round.

British Hairdresser of the Year and Global Director at TONI&GUY, Cos Sakkas, gives his top tips for helping your clients make 2023 the year of caring for their hair.

“We all know the impact a good hair day can have on our mood and wellbeing, and as our lives regain speed after the festive break, it can be easy to pull your hair into a top knot and forget about it. However, with new hair habits and a little education, you can make sure your clients’ hair looks and feels great even during these dull months.

Small Details Can Make a Big Difference

Start the new year with a new look! It doesn’t have to be dramatic, even a small change can make a big difference to a regular style; add a fringe, change the parting, embrace the natural texture. Keep ahead of the trends and talk to your clients about making a small change.

Encourage Regular Trims

For those clients that like to keep their hair long, educate them on why they need to have more regular trims. Getting rid of split ends will help keep hair looking and feeling healthy and it will keep clients returning to your more regularly. Introduce something new every time they visit; just because hair is long, doesn’t mean it can’t be exciting.

Demonstrate how to Style Hair at Home

For clients who really can’t do without their hairdryers, straighteners and tongs, show them how to use electrical tools more efficiently. More effective styling means the hair is exposed to heat for less time – this is definitely a bonus for hair health. Also reiterate the importance of using heat protection products and the art of air drying.

Introduce them to In-Salon Treatments

For their first visit after the New Year festivities, recommend a nourishing and detoxing hair treatment at the backwash. Those clients who have never experienced an in-salon treatment before will instantly see and feel a difference in their hair.

Recommend Take-Home Treatments

Talk to them about their home-care regime and make sure they’re using the right products in-between salon visits to keep their hair in tip-top condition.

Gen up on Food Knowledge

If clients are starting a New Year diet this month, talk to them about the importance the right diet has on their hair. Did they know, for example, that omega-3 fatty acids in fish like salmon are natural shine boosters, or that vitamin A, iron, beta carotene, folate, and vitamin C in spinach help prevent hair breakage?
