Pride in Our Industry

Inclusivity in hairdressing is no longer a side conversation; it has become central to the industry and where we are heading next. Nowadays, technical excellence across all hair types should be non-negotiable, but true hairdressing professionalism now demands something deeper – an understanding of identity and individuality, including those within the LGBTQ+ community.

For many clients, time in the chair is about far more than just a cut or colour; it’s about being recognised, respected and, ever more increasingly, affirmed. Today, our industry has moved beyond outdated labels and assumptions about gender, style or self-expression. It is not now just progressive thinking – or on the opposing side, rainbow-washing – it should be the salon norm.

We must celebrate the richness and diversity within our industry. There is a salon space for everyone, and that’s something powerful! From gender-neutral spaces to traditional barbershops, from home salons to high-end ateliers, choice is what allows clients to find their comfortable fit and to sit where they feel understood. It’s about broadening identity and ensuring that, wherever a client chooses to go, they’re met with openness, kindness, skill and respect.

As June is Pride Month, we celebrate those for whom inclusivity is standard. Read our Pride Edit special on page 22 – because when done correctly, hairdressing becomes more than a service; it becomes a space where people truly belong.
