4 Ways to Achieve Perfect Hair Photos in Any Lighting

Lloyd Court, Creative Director and Co-Owner of Seanhanna Wimbledon.

Whether you’re creating a beautiful balayage or getting creative with colour, the most important element to getting it right, arguably, is the lighting. Perfect lighting will not only help you analyse the true colour effectively, it will also allow the client to see exactly what they are getting too.

Here are my four top tips for getting your colour right in every kind of light:

  1. Try to find a space with as much natural light as possible. This will give the truest reflection of the colour you are creating, without making it look cooler or warmer than it actually is.
  2. Educate your clients on the effects of different types of light. If you’re looking at hair colour in the natural light it’s going to appear a lot warmer than if you’re looking at it in a bathroom’s blue light, for example. This will stop clients wondering why their new shade looks cooler when they look in a mirror at home.
  3. Soft strip lighting is a good alternative if your salon or workspace doesn’t offer a natural light source. This will create an even illumination across the hair that is neither too warm nor too cool.
  4. Use a ring light to take accurate pictures of your work. If it looks too fake, it’s going to backfire when another client asks for the same colour and their hair looks completely different to the inspiration picture.

Buy, Blend and Beyond

Remi Cachet is stepping into the colour consultation space with its new ‘Buy and Blend’ strategy that encourages extensionists to reframe their services in the context of colour.

Colour services have long been a transformative medium in hairdressing, and Remi Cachet is ready to play its part. Extensions already fulfil the hair goals of clients through length, volume and texture, which leaves colour – without chemical damage or commitment – as the natural next step on the customer journey. Victoria Lynch, Remi Cachet Founder, says, “Offering salon clients a dedicated colour consultation for extensions is crucial. Our ‘buy and blend’ service aims to inspire extensionists to experiment with new colour combinations, with a choice of our 60+ shades to meet seasonal trends and bespoke client needs.

Seasonal Trend Watch: High Gloss Espresso

Tracey Ann Smith, Artistic Director at Colorqua

“Espresso and chocolate-inspired shades are a must-have for brunettes this spring/summer. These dark, rich shades are perfect for clients wanting to uplift their colour for the new season and give it extra shine.

With these shades, it’s important that the hair is a single, all-over colour. This uniform hue can be achieved by an all-over tint, which I would then pair with a glossing service and, of course, the right aftercare. This will truly allow the block colour to stand out and do the talking.”
