Saving in Salon.
Former London Hairdresser of the Year and current President of the Fellowship for British Hairdressing Karine Jackson has been named as the first certified sustainable salon in London, awarded via an initiative from the University of Southampton. Researchers there found that hair care can be hugely energy intensive – a high resource client who washes every day, rinses, repeats and blow dries uses 500kg of carbon dioxide a year whereas simply reducing to washing hair every other day and rinsing sees the carbon footprint go down by 2000% to 25kg of carbon dioxide. Being more eco conscious in salon not only has a huge effect on the planet but on bills, making it a win-win for salons to implement these policies.
Project leader Dr Denise Baden presented Karine with her Sustainable Salon Certificate which is awarded to salons whose staff have completed the free virtual salon online training programme designed by the Ecohair team at the University of Southampton in association with VTCT and Habia which teaches stylists about key sustainability concepts, technologies and practices.
